I've been playing Sarbound version 1.0 up until the first relic quest, I wan't to upgrade my MM (Matter Manipulator) but I must have skipped the tutorial which people say is how you unlock it. After looking through a couple of similar people's issues I've seen a bunch of people saying 'activate the teleporter' or take the the flashlight out of the locker but nothing seems to work. Any one know how to fix this issue. (I also looked at S.A.I.L. and their's only the Dreadwing quests and Revisit the Erchius Mining Facility)

I don't believe there is a tutorial on how to upgrade your matter manipulator. Information you find online is likely outdated, as the 1.0 release was only a couple of days ago.
To upgrade your matter manipulator, click on the 'MM upgrade' button on the right:
In the window that pops up, select one of the available upgrades, and then press the UPGRADE button:
You'll need a certain number of Manipulator Modules to make an upgrade, which can be found in chests and reward bags.

I believe the question that's being asked is how to unlock upgrades to the matter manipulator. I'm assuming his screen is looking a lot like this, where there are enough manipulators, but no way to use them - they're still locked.
You have to select and upgrade the first tier. That's the one with an icon in it. Once that one is upgraded, then the next one will unlock.

Starbound Errors:
#1 Fullscreen & Higher Resolution Issues
For some players with bigger resolutions, a part of the screen is not working and they are unable to use it. A user on the Steam Dashboard posted a fix for this issue and you can find it below.
GO TO – C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonStarboundwin32
“Right click the game’s .exe, click on Properties and under the Compatibility tab check the box next to “Disable Display Scaling On High DPI Settings”. This always solves the problem for me!”
Also, if you have a x64 OS try to use the workaround below.
From desktop, right clicked, went to resolution settings, from there was a link to change text size & I set it back to the default small/normal setting. Making this change required me to have to log off my user profile & log back in to take effect which I did. Upon doing so & relaunching the game via steam, everything was fine, full screen worked great & was able to set to full 2560×1440 resolution with no probs & spent a few hours with a friend in game. I have windows 7 so Im not sure if this will apply to other OS but I know for me it was a God send of a fix.
#2 Starbound Not Starting
There are a lot of issues at the startup of the game, for some players the game doesn’t start and nothing happens, the client doesn’t appear and others receive an error like the one below.
“I’ve tried reinstalling it but whenever I launch it it won’t even bring up the client. Nothing happens. It shows me on steam that I’m in game for like a second but then it stops. What do I do?”
Workaround: To fix this issue and the error below, you can try and delete the whole Starbound folder and reinstalling the game via Steam but a better solution is to fix our tutorial at the end of the post and by applying our workaround you will be able to start the game in a few minutes.
#3 Starbound Crashes
These days crashes are a very common issue for games, in the first weeks after the launch. Players reported that Starbound crashes randomly through the game or at startup and they are unable to play the game for more than 10-20 minutes without a crash.
“I launch the game, chuclefish logo comes up and laughs at me, then hard crashes without saying anything. What to do?”
Solution: To fix the crashes and play the game for more than 10-20 minutes at a time go ahead and apply our workaround from the end of the post, you will find there a tutorial that will help you fix the game crashes.
#4 Starbound FPS Issues
This is the most common Starbound issue, a lot of players are complaining about FPS issues and screen tearing or other performance issues.
“Like almost everyone else having problems, I too couldn’t get starbound to work after obliterating it from my laptop and reinstalling. After spending all day doing windows updates and trying to fix the C++ issue I *finally* got it working, only to run the game with jittery framerate jumping between 60fps when I’m not moving on my ship and 15-20 FPS whenever I do anything, simple things like walking around on the planet. On top of that there seems to be screen tearing problems too. What happened to the game?? I played it a while ago and it ran very well but now the 1.0 release is full of problems?? I was planning on just playing it on my laptop so I wouldn’t have to go to the trouble of starting up my gaming Pc but at this rate its darn close to unplayable on my laptop…”
Solution: A simple way to optimize the game and fix the FPS issues and other performance issues of the game you can follow our tutorial below and apply it to your game, after that you should have constant FPS and no other errors.

With this method you can fly incredibly fast. You will be able to circle around a planet in 40-60 seconds and pierce the heavens! Your PC will probably struggle to load in the chunks quick enough.
How to Become a Jet Plane
A drill spear – You can find this item in space encounters and space stations. It is quite rare so if you prefer skipping the grind you can spawn it with the command “/spawnitem drillspear.” If you’ve ever used this weapon you know how fun it is to fly around in zero-g environments but its pull is not strong enough to lift the player in a planet’s gravity. But we’re going to fix that with…
A gravity augment – This item is also a rare find, but it can spawn in any loot chest on most planets. Higher level planets have better loot so look for it there. If again you don’t want to do that a glass of alien fruit juice will do just fine. However it runs out quickly.
Put the augment on your EPP. Make sure it’s the highest level (cooling) or else you will lose the augment when you upgrade it.
Put the augment on your EPP. Make sure it’s the highest level (cooling) or else you will lose the augment when you upgrade it.
At this point you can fly around but you notice you’re not very fast. Only a bit faster than your normal running speed and still not as fast as sprinting. You can still use this setup to get over obstacles and climb tall mountains quickly, but that’s about it. The game puts some sort of limit on your movement speed for some reason. We can get around that with some run boost. There are augments that give you this buff, but we’re already using a gravity augment so that’s not an option. You could hire a green chemist who will give you the same buff, but that only works inside your ship and runs out quickly after you leave. Green stim packs also work, but they’re incredibly expensive for the short boost they give. We’re left with only one option: food.
Ape grapes – There are many foods that give you run boost. I found that ape grapes work best because they’re cheap to craft (only two items), the ingredients are easy to get (no replanting after you harvest), and also provide energy boost on top of the run boost, which lets you extend your air time. Two of these is more than enough to get around an entire planet. You can do it with one if you have a green chemist.
Other tips
If you enjoy staying alive, you might need a way to break your fall. It’s easy to die from fall damage when falling out of the sky, but the good news is there are several ways to prevent it. Pulse jump obviously, or multi jump. You might also want to equip air dash instead of the good ol’ sprint, because as opposed to multi jump, air dash doesn’t run out, it just has a cooldown, and thus it’s very effective at breaking your fall.
Energy will be crucial as it will determine how long you are able to stay in the air. I recommend equipping whichever armor set provides the most energy.
If you don’t want to constantly wear your gravity augment, you can make a second EPP and equip it with something more useful, like healing. Then you can keep it in your inventory and switch it out when you need to. You can also color-code your EPPs with some dye.

Introduction Edit
Hello! In this tutorial, we will explore how to make your own custom sword that applies a buff to the player when they hit an enemy. This covers the topics of adding graphics, compiling mods, changing ini files, and writing a very basic C# script.
This tutorial builds on the concepts covered in How to Make a Basic Item, so it assumes you had no difficulty with that one. If you find anything confusing, be sure to read it if you have not already!
Make sure to use the Modpack Builder!
Video Tutorial Edit
Requirements Edit
- tConfig must be installed correctly. When you run the game, it should display 'tConfig' and a version number in the corner of the main menu. See Install Guide for more details.
- You will need the default items if you don't have them already. You can download them on the Resources page.
Creating the Sword Edit
- We want to make a sword. Let's pick a fairly generic one to copy for our purposes: Light's Bane. Find the .ini file and copy it into your Item folder.
- Rename the file to Defender's Sword.ini. Later on, we'll make it give the Ironskin Buff, but for now, we want to make it easily crafted. First, open the ini file up and change type to -1, damage to 12, and value to 8000.
- If you're wondering about the different attributes here, you can read about the full list of possibilities on the Item Attributes page.
- Next, we will now adjust the recipe to be easier to craft. Again, you can set it to something very simple such as 1 Wood for testing purposes, and then balance the item later. You can also use Yorai's Final Cheat Menu to spawn the items in.
Adding the Graphics Edit
- Just like in the other tutorial, we have set up our item's ini data. Now we need to give it an image to use. Download this image, and save it as Defender's Sword.png, in the same folder as the ini file.
Using XNB_Exporter can also be very helpful. What it does is basically converts the XNB files into PNG so it is editable and viewable. (http://mirror.dataorb.net/XNB_Exporter.zip) There is no reliable tool to convert PNG files back into XNB format, but it is fortunate that this is not necessary.
Creating the Effect Edit
The reason we will make the sword buff the user instead of debuffing an enemy is actually rather simple: since we have an icon when we're buffed, we will immediately know when it works. So, how do we make the game know to buff the player? It's pretty easy, but might look more complex than it is: we have to write a C# script.
- Open notepad or your text editor of choice. The same one that you use to edit .ini files will work.
- Now, simply copy and paste the following code into the file:
- Choose File, then Save As, and name it Defender's Sword.cs. Again, this should be beside the other two files. They should all have the exact same name, but with different file extensions.
- A not-so-brief explanation of what is happening here:
- First, just look at the curly braces {} - these are used to group code together. The very first line is a function definition, and we're saying anything in the braces belongs to that function.
- There's a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes, but when we say 'DamageNPC' we're signalling that we want a function to be called. When the game determines the time is right, it will do everything we tell 'DamageNPC' to do. In this case, adding a buff.
- 'public' means that any code can access the method. This is important! If we forgot to put that in, or said 'private', nothing else could access the function, meaning it would never be called, and our buff never added.
- 'void' means that DamageNPC does not return a value. Some functions will return true or false depending or whether they were successful, other numbers, or even entire objects.
- For 'Player myPlayer', 'Player' is the type of object being created, and 'myPlayer' is the name of it. Another way to think of it is that myPlayer is a Player. (If you want to set it to add the buff to the npc attacked, replace 'myPlayer.AddBuff' with 'npc.AddBuff'.)
- '// Add the buff' is simply a comment. The game ignores these, but it lets you make notes on the code and organize it better.
- Finally, 'myPlayer.AddBuff (5, 600);' is a statement. We are calling a function named AddBuff, which belongs to 'myPlayer'. We are giving it two values, 5 and 600. What do these mean? If you refer to other documentation, you will see that 5 is the buff type for Ironskin. 600 is the length of time the buff lasts. There are 60 frames per second, thus 600 frames would become a 10 second buff.
- That was probably a lot to take in, but the big thing to take away from that is that the first line was the function header, that we receive data from, and the body of the function processes the data and does stuff.
- One other thing you could do is have it be a random chance of applying the buff. The easiest way to set this up is by making it a 1-in-__ chance. For example, if you wanted a 1 in 10 chance (which is 10% of the time), you could put this as your .cs code instead:
Testing the Sword Edit
- If everything has been set up correctly, you should be able to simply run the Modpack Builder, choose your mod's number, and compile it. It will then generate it for use in the game.
- If you're not successful, it should return with a reason why. If you see a bunch of gibberish, try to find a part that has two numbers in brackets, such as (6, 18). This is the position in the text where the .cs code broke. It will also say something like '; expected'. This helps you find out where it went wrong and why!
- If you successfully crafted your sword and attacked something with it, you should see something like this:
Final Words Edit
Hopefully you will have been successful in creating your sword. Ideally, what you will have learned from this tutorial is that scripting, while intimidating, is actually pretty simple. There are a ton of resources available for learning the different scripts. You could try playing around by adding different buffs or debuffs with the sword, or maybe even try making your own!

The Steam 'join game' option
- Steam (all OS)
The easiest way to connect to friends playing Starbound is through your Steam friend list. Simply right click a player's name in your friends list and select 'Join Game'. This will connect you to their in-progress game of Starbound and you'll appear in their universe. There you'll have everything on your ship with you, but anything on planets will appear as it does in their game, not yours.
Alternatively you can select 'Invite to game' which will invite them to join your game with whatever character they're playing with. You must be logged into the game with a character for this option to be available.
After selecting to open Starbound in Steam the option comes up to launch a dedicated server. This will launch starbound_server.exe which hosts a server from your machine. This allows players to connect to your machine to play Starbound, even if the game is closed (provided the server software is still running).
- Linux (Ubuntu)
- A guide for setting up a linux server can be found here Guide:LinuxServerSetup
If the computer you wish to run the server on has a private IP:
You will need administrative access to all routers between the server and the internet (In a typical home, you may have up to 2 or more. In some cases the modem itself has a built in router that is often overlooked)
You will also likely need administrative access to any firewalls between the server and the internet (In a typical home, this would just be the firewall built into your OS)
Manually
- Run the Starbound server in your Starbound directory. The default location is:
- On 32-bit Windows, C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommonstarboundwin32starbound_server.exe
- On 64-bit Windows: C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonStarboundwin32starbound_server.exe
- On Mac OS, ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound
- On 64-bit Linux, ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Starbound/linux/starbound_server (there is no 32-bit Linux server)
- If the Starbound server cannot be found at these locations, then right-click the game in Steam to find the Starbound directory.
To host a server you will need to forward/allow TCP port 21025 on your router and firewall (if enabled)
See the resource section on a Remote Port Testing URLIf the resource reports that the port is closed then you will need to:
- Check your firewall(s) in your OS
- Check your forwarding rules on your router(s)
Locally, you should still be able to connect to your server using the IP 127.0.0.1 (Local Loopback) in the Starbound client, however your friends won't.
Once the remote tool reports that the port is open, then you may give your IP out to your friends to play. To locate your IP use this, or another similar URL
How To Make Starbound Run Faster Free
- Load the game, click 'Multiplayer' in the main menu
- Select the character you wish to use
- Server Address: Enter the IP or DNS name you wish to connect to.
- Enter the server account and password if this has been configured, otherwise it can be left blank
- Click on 'Join Server'
- Invite your friends to connect too!
Forming a Party
Once you're in-game, you and your friends will be on different ships and or planets. To CREATE a party, once the friends have joined your game, press the ( + ) icon in the upper right, below your character portrait, and put in your friend('s/s') character nickname. (If you do not know the friend's nickname, check the chat for it, displayed such as: '(Name) Has Connected'), and click on invite. To JOIN a party, once the owner of the party has sent you an invitation, simply click accept, or deny. In a few seconds, you should see the owner's Character Picture, as well as any other Player's Characters pictures that are already in the party.
Note: Once you're in a party with someone, you can warp to their ship by clicking on their portrait.
By editing the file 'starbound.config' in the giraffe_storage directory, players can adjust the settings for the server they're hosting. This method allows players to configure server passwords, ports, default game settings and much more by adjusting values.
